Rafael dos Anjos thought he was fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov, not Rustam Khabilov, at UFC 170

It's all in a name ...

Well here is something that doesn't happen everyday.

The No. 6-ranked Lightweight fighter on the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) roster, Rafael dos Anjos, recently agreed to face Rustam Khabilov at UFC 170 on Feb. 22, 2014.

However, dos Anjos recently told Brazilian news outlet Globo that he thought he was accepting a fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov (not Khabilov).

So how does that happen, exactly?

According to dos Anjos, it was a lack of communication between he and his manager, Ed Soares.

"My manager Ed Soares, he was telling me, said. 'The UFC gave you the Russian.' It was a lack of communication. I thought it was the Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is seventh in the rankings. Even though he was behind me, I thought it was a fight that might make more sense, and I accepted. Only two days later in a publication tagged me on Twitter and I saw it was Rustam Khabilov. Then I saw that something was wrong and called my manager, and he said: 'Not Khabib (Nurmagomedov).' But, then I had already accepted the fight. It was lack of communication. He also thought it was Nurmagomedov."

Confusing, impossible-to-pronounce Russian names FTW!

Nevertheless, the fight contract is signed, sealed and delivered, which means that dos Anjos now finds himself putting up his five-fight win streak against an un-ranked opponent.

However, despite not being in the Top 10, Khabilov has proven to be a formidable foe, winning six straight bouts, including going undefeated (3-0) inside the Octagon. While a win over Khabilov would be a great thing, it probably won't raise his stock as much as a fight and subsequent victory over Nurmagomedov would have.
