Danny Castillo was so close to scoring the biggest win of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) career last night (Sat., Dec. 14, 2013) at UFC on Fox 9 in Sacramento, Calif., that he probably could have tasted it.
However, Edson Barboza was somehow able to survive two nightmarish rights hands in the first round, which were followed up with ground-and-pound once he hit the mat and then a rear-naked choke attempt. The Brazilian was clearly in serious trouble, but "Last Call" was unable to close the deal and let him off the hook.
That was a big mistake.
Barboza collected himself and then began to execute his game plan in the second and third rounds, which included something spinning shit, as well as a left cross that put Castillo on his keister. Indeed, Barboza was able to survive a lopsided opening frame -- one that could easily have been a 10-8 for Castillo if judges knew how to score those in mixed martial arts (MMA) -- to win a majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28).
And, of course, "Fight of the Night" honors.
