Former women's title challenger Liz Carmouche continued her quest for another crack at the crown tonight (Wed., Nov. 6, 2013) in her throwdown with Alexis Davis on the main card of the UFC Fight Night 31: "Fight for the Troops 3" event at Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
The first round was relatively even, a quiet five minute mix of action and patience. Davis was the aggressor but Carmouche answered with enough offense to keep things close. More interesting, perhaps, was the fact that there was no clinch work or nary a takedown attempt from either side.
Carmouche opened a cut on Davis within that first round, though, and did her best to exploit that in the second. The two battled hard but Davis was clearly the superior fighter.
Into the third and Carmouche's hopes of a rematch with Ronda Rousey appeared to be slipping further and further away. Davis continued pressing forward, this time mixing in clinch work with her striking. Her offensive output, speaking strictly in volume, may have been the factor that turned the tide in her favor.
In the end, the judges awarded her a split decision on final scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 28-29.
