Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is back for episode 12 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 18, led by bantamweight coaches and UFC 168 co-main event rivals Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate.
Coach Rousey shows up at the TUF house and cooks up some Armenian food and hey look, it's TUF 5 contestant Manny Gamburyan, who must have been paid $100,001 for his appearance. Poor David Grant can't partake in the barbecue because he's got to make weight for his semifinal match-up against Anthony Gutierrez, who continues to pig out.
Just like last week's semifinal (recap), which had "Cupcake" riding the pine, Ronda opts to withdraw as head coach since both fighters are under her banner. Grant has Chris Beal and Jessica Rakoczy in his corner, while Gutierrez has Shayna Bazler and Jessamyn Duke in his.
"Rowdy" is showing her cadets how she executes her patented armbar and tells them it's okay if they reveal her technique, she's going to get the tap anyway.
Coach's challenge!
The cast and crew show up at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and UFC President Dana White has set up an enormous rock climbing wall. First coach to the top gets 10 grand, while each team member gets $1.5k each (and free Miller Lite and NOS Energy drinks).
They get off to a fairly even start but Ronda pulls ahead and gets to the bell first, rings it and delivers a middle finger with FUCK YOU BITCH! Pure class. Miesha has to do the walk of shame back to her team while Ronda gets a group hug (and a huge wad of cash).
Still wasn't as good as this epic TUF moment.
Back at the TUF house and Gutierrez is stuffing his face. Naturally, the Cody Bollinger debacle is mentioned since he was unable to make weight, though it didn't keep him from getting a six-figure contract with World Series of Fighting (WSOF). Gutierrez tells people to stop judging him.
He calls himself the "new breed" of fighter and somewhere in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Erik Koch is facepalming.
Both he and Grant hit the gym and make compelling cases for why they will get the job done inside the cage. Ronda revisits the weight issue and Gutierrez wants everyone to STFU and mind their own business. Good god, this kid better make weight.
Turns out Grant use to be a DJ before he was a fighter. "DJ Davey G." Hey, I used to work at Pottery Barn, so I can't say shit.
It's the day of the weigh ins and Gutierrez is nine pounds over the allowable limit and doesn't seem to be in any big hurry to lose the weight. Ironically, he jumps into the tub using the old Epsom salt bags from Bollinger. Grant, on the other hand, is right on target.
You know, like a pro.
They head over to the training center and Gutierrez is rubber-suiting it on the treadmill. He's down to 142 with three hours to go. Now it's two hours to go and he gains a pound. Lolz. Baszler tells Coach Rousey to not fall for his "I got this" routine and stay on his ass.
Remember on episode nine when Ronda threw Miesha under the bus for the exact same thing?
The entire team has to get involved and they go through a disgustingly brutal process to try to get this kid down to 136 and by the time the weigh ins roll around, he's not even close. 140 on his first attempt. As expected, Grant hits his mark without incident.
Gutierrez has an hour to lose four pounds and he looks devastated. They stick him back in the sauna and he's breaking down. So much for all that tough guy talk about eating whatever he wants. To date, Ross Pointon is the only guy to pull that off and that was on season three.
Ross went to bed on a full stomach and somehow woke up eight pounds lighter.
Anyway, this clown doesn't make weight and quits before the hour is up. Not even Manny Gamburyan's death stare can scare him back into the sauna. What a waste. Time for his come to Jesus meeting with Dana and yep, he's gonzo. Pretty sad for a guy who didn't even have to fight to get to the semis.
Adios!
Grant gets into the live finale on a forfeit. Ronda storms into Dana's office and tells him she's going to make weight in three days and he can't figure out why. She tries to take responsibility for the mishap but he's not having it and gives her a consolation hug.
Dana tells Gutierrez to fly home and get a real job.
Ouch.
