UFC 167 results: Ali Bagautinov wins decision over Tim Elliott

The main pay-per-view (PPV) card of tonight's (Sat., Nov. 16, 2013) UFC 167: "St. Pierre vs. Hendricks" event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, kicked off with a flyweight encounter pitting Tim Elliott against Ali Bagautinov.

Unheralded? Sure, but there would be no better opportunity to impress the masses than this.

Elliott opened the bout utilizing his aggressively odd stance and needlessly reckless style. He was leaving his chin available to be blasted and Bagautinov was throwing hard punches trying to do just that. He was missing, though, and the two remained even through the first half of the opening round.

The round closed out with the Russian finding his range and landing some sick knees and legs to the head.

The second frame saw Bagautinov stay aggressive with his offense but it wasn't long before he found himself in a deep arm-in guillotine. He managed to get himself out of it by simply standing and slipping his head out. He was immediately taken down and while Elliott failed to do anything with it, he was clearly more effective in his game in the second stanza.

Headed into the third, it certainly looked even.

While fatigue appeared to be taking effect late in the second, both guys held nothing back deep into the third. Bagautinov was landing the harder punches and doing so at a higher rate. Elliott was slipping away at times but rarely making his opponent pay with well-placed counter shots.

Bouncing around with an unorthodox stance while keeping his hands low wasn't doing much to score those all important points.

The final round ended with a flurry, as Elliott came out of nowhere with a huge takedown and a big knee on the way back up. It was too little too late, however.

Final scores: 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.
