World Series of Fighting targeting Jon Fitch vs. Steve Carl next

Steve Carl vs. Jon Fitch for the WSOF title? Sign me up!

Mark Kolbe

Steve Carl became the first World Series of Fighting (WSOF) welterweight champion when he put Josh Burkman to sleep at WSOF 6 in Coral Gables, Florida, at the BankUnited Center.

Burkman made waves in the mixed martial arts (MMA) world when he was able to defeat Jon Fitch by technical submission at WSOF 3. The fight was a huge upset as Fitch was still considered to be one of the top welterweights in the world despite being released by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Carl's win was a major upset and has set him up for some bigger and better things with the promotion. MMA Fighting's Dave Doyle was in Long Beach, California for the World Jiu Jitsu Expo and caught up with WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz.

This is a solid fight for WSOF. Fitch still carries some name value within MMA circles and Carl has demonstrated an ability to excite crowds as demonstrated by his bout with Josh Burkman. However, with only one more event planned for 2013, it's like that this fight will be happening some time next year.

And should Fitch win, it's pretty likely that Abdel-Aziz will try and put the rubber match between Fitch and Burkman together. It's by far the most compelling matchup he can make with the talent currently on roster.
