The main event of tonight's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29: "Maia vs. Shields" event from Sao Paulo, Brazil, featured Demian Maia looking to continue his impressive run in the welterweight division against the always game Jake Shields. A victory, if impressive enough, could possibly earn the Brazilian a shot at the 170-pound championship. That's motivation enough to put on a show.
It's just too bad he didn't come anywhere close to doing that.
If anything, he showed beyond a shadow of a doubt that he would be thoroughly outmatched standing across the cage from Georges St. Pierre, the greatest welterweight champion of all time. Maia couldn't work his submission game even when he had superior position but the larger problem was he couldn't keep Shields from taking him down and neutralizing him from top.
Something St. Pierre would do with ease.
Still, it was a close fight and after five full rounds the judges were called on to decide a winner. The scores came in split: 48-47 Shields, 48-47 Maia, and 48-47 Shields.
The less said about this one the better, though, huh Maniacs?
