Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields fight results UFC Fight Night 29, Round 5

The main event of tonight's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29: "Maia vs. Shields" event from Sao Paulo, Brazil, featured Demian Maia looking to continue his impressive run in the welterweight division against the always game Jake Shields. A victory, if impressive enough, could possibly earn the Brazilian a shot at the 170-pound championship. That's motivation enough to put on a show.

The final round opened with Maia throwing hard punches and Shields just looking for the right opening to earn yet another takedown so he could lay around and bore everyone to death. The crowd was quiet but that seemed more out of apathy than discontent.

Or maybe everyone just decided to go home.

Shields shot in for another takedown and Maia defended against the fence. The referee was proactive this time, quickly letting both fighters know they needed to work lest he separate them and make them fight.

As if.

They did end up resetting and it was there that Maia landed a few shots. Shields had enough rather quickly and shot in for yet another takedown, which he couldn't complete.

The hammer sounded for the final 10 seconds and Maia let it all go while Shields threw kicks to keep him away. This was an awful fight.
