Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields fight results UFC Fight Night 29, Round 2

The main event of tonight's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29: "Maia vs. Shields" event from Sao Paulo, Brazil, featured Demian Maia looking to continue his impressive run in the welterweight division against the always game Jake Shields. A victory, if impressive enough, could possibly earn the Brazilian a shot at the 170-pound championship. That's motivation enough to put on a show.

After a couple of kicks to open the second round, Shields dropped all pretense and shot under for a takedown. Maia did the same thing at the same time, leading to a quick bump of the heads, but after a brief reset, Shields shot in for another double leg.

This one got the job done.

That meant we were smack dab in the middle of a Jake Shields fight, so moderately busy top control with occasional submission looks was the name of the game. Enough to not be stood up, not enough to make for a truly exciting contest.

For his part, Maia was throwing his legs up and looking for a triangle choke from the bottom. Beyond that, there wasn't much he could do.

Shields was effectively neutralizing his foe but it was putting everyone to sleep.

Yawn.
