Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields fight results UFC Fight Night 29, Round 1

The main event of tonight's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29: "Maia vs. Shields" event from Sao Paulo, Brazil, featured Demian Maia looking to continue his impressive run in the welterweight division against the always game Jake Shields. A victory, if impressive enough, could possibly earn the Brazilian a shot at the 170-pound championship. That's motivation enough to put on a show.

The bout opened with Maia attacking Shields with a strategy he's employed to great success in years past. In short, he clinched, earned a takedown, and worked for a submission from top.

He couldn't get it, though, and after some really hard work, the American managed to get back to his feet and push the Brazilian up against the fence. It didn't matter, however, as Maia earned himself another takedown not long after. It wasn't long after that that he had Shields' back in mount and was working for a choke.

He couldn't get that either.

What's worse, Shields reversed and found himself on top and in control to close out the opening round. His attempts at working for a submission proved fruitless and they went to the second essentially at a stalemate.
