Bummed that Jon Jones isn't defending his 205-pound strap against Glover Teixeira at UFC 169?
Don't be.
Instead, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has booked a championship doubleheader for its annual Super Bowl Weekend pay-per-view (PPV) extravaganza, which takes place on Feb. 1, 2013 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The promotion made the blockbuster announcement earlier today.
Leading the charge will be UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo (23-1), all patched up and ready to go after injuring himself in his UFC 163 title defense against Chan Sung Jung last August. "Scarface" will finally give longtime contender Ricardo Lamas (13-2) a crack at the crown.
Something he's been asking for all year.
In bantamweight co-main event action, Dominick Cruz (19-1) will finally make his return to mixed martial arts (MMA) in an attempt to unify the 135-pound straps against interim champion Renan Barao (31-1), who has managed to rattle off two consecutive title defenses while "The Dominator" recovered from multiple knee surgeries.
Elsewhere on the card, former UFC 265-pound champion Frank Mir (16-8) will face off against fellow struggling heavyweight Alistair Overeem (36-13). The loser will have dropped three consecutive bouts inside the Octagon, which may or may not result in a pink slip.
Seems like nobody is safe these days.
Stay tuned to MMAmania.com for future fight announcements for UFC 169 as they become available. In the meantime, let's get some early predictions on the main and co-main event. New champs in 2014? Or does the Nova Uniao era continue uninterrupted?
Sound off!
