Of all the past opponents UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has ever squared off against inside the Octagon, who is the one you would like to see him rematch most? Now reverse that. Who is the man you would like to see him rematch least?
Is Jake Shields either of those people?
Well, according to Shields, he's feeling pretty good about the state of his career right now and his positioning in the 170-pound division following his split decision victory over Demian Maia in the main event of last night's (Wed., Oct. 9, 2013) UFC Fight Night 29 showcase from Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Fox Sports 1. He's feeling so good, in fact, that he's got his eye on a rematch with St. Pierre.
Comments he made at the post-fight press conference:
"I think (the win over Maia) puts me really high back up. Maia was ranked number four in the world (and was on) a four-fight win streak. I already have wins over Carlos Condit, Robbie Lawler, top contenders. So I want another shot at GSP."
St. Pierre has a date with Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada, but beyond that the talk of a superfight against Anderson Silva has cooled considerably thanks to "The Spider's" knockout loss to Chris Weidman earlier this year. That means he'll be available, assuming he retains his welterweight title.
But is Shields next in line?
That's doubtful. So who else is he open to fighting assuming a rematch with the French-Canadian is out of the question?
"Whether I have to fight Rory MacDonald, Carlos Condit, any of the top contenders, I just want to fight people at the top right now."
Fair enough.
Who do you Maniacs want to see Shields fight next, if you want to see him fight again at all?
