Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White was unhappy with the controversial outcome of the Lightweight mixed martial arts (MMA) match between Abel Trujillo and Roger Bowling, which ended in a dreaded "No Contest" at UFC Fight Night 27 back in late August.
It was an exciting back-and-forth brawl that ended abruptly in round two when a pair of knees to a downed Bowling led to a technical knockout stoppage. However, the referee claimed the shots that set up the stoppage were illegal, even though the video replay indicated the first landed to the chest and the second near the shoulder area.
"Those shots were not illegal," White barked at the post-fight press conference. "The first one hit him in the chest, and the second hit him in the shoulder."
White claimed that Trujillo should have won the bout and, accordingly, was paid a win bonus on top of his show purse. That, apparently, was not enough to right the possible "wrong" result, with news emerging earlier this afternoon that Abel Trujillo vs. Roger Bowling 2 has been added to UFC on Fox 9, which is set to go down inside the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, California, on Dec. 14, 2013.
It's clearly not the rematch of the century, but it will go a long way toward establishing closure, similar to when Phil Davis and Wagner Prado ran back their Light Heavyweight clash in 2012 because an accidental eye poke ended their initial encounter prematurely.
"Mr. Wonderful" went on to rout the Brazilian-bred fighter via second round submission two months later. A pattern that Trujillo will undoubtedly look to emulate when he hooks 'em up with "Relentless" again in little more than two months.
UFC on FoX 9 will be headlined by a 155-pound title fight that pits UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis against former Strikeforce division titleholder Josh Thomson, while former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber meets fellow bantamweight stalwart Michael McDonald in his quest to get back into the 135-pound title hunt.
That's not all.
