You wanted him? You got him.
Daniel Cormier didn't waste any time in his post-fight interview following his nine minute destruction of Dion Staring in the co-main event of the final Strikeforce show this past Saturday night (Jan. 12, 2013), calling out former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, the man he was originally supposed to face this past November before a training injury nixed the bout.
Well now, according to Yahoo! Sports, the bout has been made official once again and is expected to appear on the upcoming UFC on Fox 7 event in a few months (April 20, 2013) at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The Cormier vs. Mir bout will help support a planned UFC Lightweight title fight between UFC champion Ben Henderson and Strikeorce Champion Gilbert Melendez, a bout which was rumored yesterday, but also made official today.
Cormier has looked unstoppable as of late, shooting off to an undefeated (11-0) start to his mixed martial arts (MMA) career with an impressive finish of Antonio Silva and a dominant decision victory over Josh Barnett to claim the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix. "DC" has big plans of completing his unfinished business with Mir and then dropping down to light heavyweight to take on current champion Jon Jones (read all about that here).
This upcoming April will be the first step of that process.
Mir has not competed since losing a heavyweight title fight to Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 146 last May. Initially scheduled to fight Cormier in what would have been his final Strikeforce fight on his contract, he suffered a training injury and was forced out of the bout. Now, he'll have an opportunity to get himself right back in the title mix should be defeat "DC," especially since dos Santos was dethroned last month and there's a new king at the top of the division.
With Cormier getting his wish granted just days after calling out Mir, perhaps other UFC combatants will take a hint. If you make Joe Silva's job easy, you might just get the fight you've always wanted.
