Video: Strikeforce: ‘Marquardt vs. Saffiedine' Fight Journal: Daniel Cormier's final preparations for Dion Staring

New, comments

In the days before his final Strikeforce bout against Dion Staring, E. Casey Leydon of MMA Fighting followed Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier behind the scenes of his fight week preparations in Oklahoma City. Watch the video of Cormier's fight journal above.

On Saturday night (Jan. 12, 2013), Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier will step into Strikeforce's Hexagon for the final time in his career.

Cormier (10-0) is one of the elite heavyweight mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters on the planet, and once Strikeforce seizes operations for good after Saturday's show, the former Olympian will move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) where he will immediately become a top contender in either the heavyweight or light heavyweight division.

Before Cormier joins the UFC ranks, he must overcome one final obstacle at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, OK. The obstacle comes in the form of relatively unknown veteran heavyweight Dion Staring.

With Cormier's undefeated record and history of dominating every opponent placed before him, Staring has been pegged as a 20-1 underdog by odds makers. Some fighters would let the fact they are such a huge favorite play into their mind, but not Cormier.

As the hours before Cormier's final Strikeforce fight ticked down, the 33-year-old allowed E. Casey Leydon of MMA Fighting to follow him around Oklahoma City for exclusive video access of his fight week preparations.

In the video above, Cormier reveals his thoughts about his career, his emotions after his win over Josh Barnett last May, his family and much more.
