Why does it feel like this is the most promotion we've seen of this event so far?
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to network television one week from today (Sat., Aug. 4, 2012) with UFC on Fox 4: "Shogun vs. Vera" at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. And despite the lack of heavy marketing for the show, it's a hugely important event.
That's because the next challenger to the light heavyweight title could very well emerge depending on the outcome of the top two fights on the card.
In the main event, Mauricio Rua takes on Brandon Vera while Lyoto Machida vs. Ryan Bader serves as the co-headlining attraction. Of those four men, all but Vera apparently have the potential to earn a 205-pound title shot with an impressive victory. That's according to UFC President Dana White himself.
Interestingly enough, all three have faced current division champion Jon Jones and each one of them met the same fate -- they were finished inside of three rounds. That makes a rematch unappealing but if Dan Henderson can land an "H-Bomb" at UFC 151 on Sept. 1 in Las Vegas and take the strap home with him, it could serve to create a far more fascinating jam at the top of the weight class.
We shall see.
