Things that make you go, "WHOA."
Three-time King of Pancrase, Bas Rutten, knows a thing or two about the ground game, which should come as no surprise, since three of his four losses came by way of submission.
That's when "El Guapo" (28-4) decided to see what all the fuss was about, and had a little help from onscreen video highlights hyping his next event. Rutten see, Rutten do, as the former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion explains:
"I always think about the time I would say to Frank Shamrock, 'C'mon, stand up, fight like a man.' I hate myself now for saying such a stupid comment. I was walking down the street with a bunch of fighters and we look around and there is this huge screen. We're watching the preview for the next day. And there, the guy sits in the half guard, and the leg is over his body and he grabs the heel and he falls back. I look and say, 'Wow that's a cool technique.' The next day in fighting I go, 'I might as well try it!' I grab the heel and I fall back and since I never did it, I had no clue as to what kind of pressure I was putting on his joints, so I broke his shinbone. That was the moment that I go, 'Whoa! Ground fighting is way more dominant.'"
Hear Rutten elaborate on his bone-crunching discovery after the jump.
