The main card of the UFC on FUEL TV 3: "Korean Zombie vs. Poirier" event going down tonight (Tues., May 15, 2012) in Virginia kicked off with a middleweight mash up pitting Jason MacDonald against Tom Lawlor.
MacDonald's career plan has been laid out for some time. He's admitted openly that he hoped to win here before going on to fight at UFC 149 in his native Canada before sailing off into the sunset. Lawlor, of course, was simply looking to put together a solid performance after losing three of his last four fights.
Did he ever.
After avoiding a head kick and stuffing a takedown, Lawlor put together a few punches that rocked MacDonald and had him doing a faceplant in the center of the Octagon. The referee stepped in to make the save and Lawlor is back in the win column while "The Athlete's" future is uncertain.
Downright "Filthy."
The fight opened as all fights do, with the two standing and hoping to establish themselves in the center of the cage. MacDonald opened with a head kick but it was slow as molasses. He followed up shortly after with a takedown attempt but failed on that too.
Not so hot to start.
It quickly got worse as Lawlor landed a strong left hand clean on the jaw followed by a right hook behind the ear that put MacDonald face down, ass up.
That's not the way he likes to fight, though.
Lawlor's birthday was today, so this worked out rather nicely for him.
