In today's edition of bizarre matchmaking news, UFC on FOX 4 has added a doozy.
Former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler Phil Davis, who came up short via unanimous decision against Rashad Evans in the main event of UFC on FOX 2 this past January, will get an opportunity for redemption when he battles ex-Strikeforce heavyweight veteran Chad Griggs, making his 205-pound debut, at the UFC on FOX 4 event scheduled for the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 4, 2012.
UFC's official UFC on FOX 4 page brought the news earlier today.
Davis (9-1) saw his undefeated record snapped by "Suga" four months ago in a bout where he was simply outmatched in all areas by the well-rounded former champion.
Will "Mr. Wonderful" be able to get back on track against a leaner "Grave Digger?"
Griggs (11-2) suffered his first defeat in five years at the hands of the significantly bigger, stronger and more athletic Travis Browne at UFC 145 last month. He was never in the fight, absorbed a thundering flying knee and then was quickly taken down and choked out right before the midway point of the first round.
An undersized heavyweight, he had previously stated that if he felt he was physically manhandled by anyone, he'd be willing to drop down to light heavyweight.
Now's his chance, although after being schooled on the ground by the far less technically sound Browne, it will be a pretty stern test stepping in there against a former national champion wrestler.
UFC on FOX 4 is expected to feature the recently announced middleweight bout of Hector Lombard vs. Brian Stann. Ryan Bader vs. Lyoto Machida, Terry Etim vs. Joe Lauzon, Oli Thompson vs. Philip De Fries and Rob Broughton vs. Matt Mitrione are also scheduled for the "City of Angels."
