Strikeforce light heavyweight hopeful Gian Villante is looking to notch his third consecutive win under the Strikeforce banner when he trades blows with Derrick Mehmen at the May 19 Showtime event from the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Newsday.com brought word of the pending bout over the weekend.
After Chad Griggs dug him a heavyweight grave in early 2011, Villante (9-3) shed some skin and tried his luck at 205-pounds. He wasn't able to convince the judges he was better than Lorenz Larkin, but has since won back-to-back fights over Keith Berry and Trevor Smith.
Mehmen (12-4) saw his two-fight win streak go up in smoke at the hands of Rodney Wallace last Saturday night in Texas; however, the "Caveman" was victorious in his last fight under the Strikeforce banner, outpointing Roy Jones at "Challengers 18" back in August.
Here are the current fight card and rumors for Strikeforce: "Barnett vs. Cormier:"
265 lbs.: Josh Barnett vs. Daniel Cormier
155 lbs.: Gilbert Melendez vs. TBA
170 lbs.: Nate Marquardt vs. Tyron Woodley
205 lbs.: Derrick Mehmen vs. Gian Villante
