UFC on FX 6: "Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson" tonight (Fri., Dec. 14, 2012) at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gold Coast, Australia, featured the welterweight final of the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) "Smashes" season that recently concluded in "The Land Down Under."
It featured Robert Whittaker, the hard-hitting New Zealander, taking on Bradley Scott, The British finisher.
Whittaker took the early advantage, landing combinations and blitzing Scott with his trademark heavy punches. Scott persevered and forced a second stanza that saw him even things up with a grappling heavy game mixed with a few big shots of his own.
Then came the third and it was getting increasingly difficult to determine who had the edge. Both were exchanging meaningful offense while hanging in tight and staying in the fight.
With one minute left, Whittaker got super aggressive, much to the delight of his home crowd. It's hard to tell how much affect they may have had, considering many of his punches weren't exactly landing clean.
Still, the crowd got hot at the end and both men let loose with the hands.
Ultimately, all three judges agreed that Whittaker had done enough to earn two of the three rounds, as he swept the board with scores of 29-28.
Robert Whittaker is your welterweight TUF "Smashes" Ultimate Fighter.
"The contract is a bonus," he said. "It feels good defending my country."
