Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was back in action last night (Dec. 14, 2012) with UFC on FX 6: "Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson," which emanated from the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.
It was the live finale for The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) "Sm-Ashes" -- appropriately named -- because this card was smashing.
Hopefully you were around to see it.
In addition to not having a regular air date in the United States, this latest entry into the mixed martial arts (MMA) reality show wasn't top heavy with star power. In fact, its head coaches George Sotiropoulos and Ross Pearson, were both coming off losses in the previous fights.
And it came as an appetizer to tomorrow night's entree, TUF 16: "Nelson vs. Mitrione."
There were plenty of justifiable reasons to sleep on this card, but in the end, it's the talent that makes the show, not the show that makes the talent. To that end, the talent stepped up and delivered from top to bottom. Cody Donovan got things started the same way Ross Pearson got things finished, with a crushing technical knockout (TKO) win.
Oh, by the way, Hector Lombard is back.
We also have a couple of new TUF champions in the lightweight and welterweight division. Bradley Scott was teased for looking like original TUF kingpin Forrest Griffin, but had the last laugh when he emulated the former light heavyweight titleholder with a sensational -- albeit losing -- performance against Robert Whittaker.
Norman Parke will join him as the newest addition to the ZUFFA ranks after doing work against Colin Fletcher.
Mike Wilkinson was electric in his win over Brendan Loughnane, Joey Beltran saved his job by outsmarting Igor Pokrajac, Ben Alloway kicked his way into the highlight reels by pasting Manuel Rodriguez and Mike Pierce, uh, well let's just say he won.
Yeah, moving on.
It was all you could ask for in a fight card. Sure, it didn't have the fanfare of UFC 154 and it won't have the firepower of UFC 155, but it didn't cost you anything except a couple of hours on a Friday night, which you probably would have just wasted anyway chasing trim at the local watering hole.
If you already did, shame on you, and remember what you missed for next time.
