If we're to believe those in power at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), tonight's (Sat., Nov. 17, 2012) clash pitting Martin Kampmann vs. Johny Hendricks in the co-main event of UFC 154: "St. Pierre vs. Condit" at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is a welterweight number one contender bout.
That's if we can believe everyone.
The reality is less certain. Georges St. Pierre fights Carlos Condit in the main event of the show to unify the two 170-pound titles and set up the apparent match-up against the winner of Kampmann vs. Hendricks.
You know, assuming "Rush" doesn't win and immediately end up booking in a super-fight against reigning Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, as has been widely rumored for about a month now. After all, a date between St. Pierre and Silva at Cowboys Stadium in Texas is far more enticing than any other fight at present time.
That hasn't stopped "The Hitman" from setting his sights on the welterweight belt:
"I'm going to keep knocking dudes out and beating them up until I get that title."
Hendricks, too, can't seem to get that strap out of his head:
"I gotta beat Kampmann to get to that UFC title and nothing else matters."
Let's assume all goes the way UFC wants it to and St. Pierre gets Silva later on. Hendricks claiming he'll wait for his shot at the title, while Kampmann is saying all the right things. In the end, they may not have a choice in the matter.
Either way, the winner will clearly set themselves up as one of the top welterweights in the world, no matter what St. Pierre -- or Condit -- is doing.
