Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has announced that it will return to Japan early next year, with a presumably stacked card that will take place inside the renowned Saitama Super Arena.
FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" brought word that UFC on Fuel TV 8 will officially take place in Saitama, Japan, on March 2, 2013. Currently, no fighters or match ups have been confirmed for the Asian-inspired card.
Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans will recall the last time the UFC set foot in Saitama, when UFC 144 sold out every seat in the arena on Feb. 26, 2012.
The main event featured a title bout between UFC Lightweight champion Ben Henderson and Frankie Edgar, in a fight that saw the belt change hands when "Bendo" was able to notch a very entertaining (and controversial to some) unanimous decision victory.
It also featured MMA legends and PRIDE veterans Quinton Jackson and Mark Hunt taking part in fights versus separate opponents, as well as Japanese fighters Yoshihiro Akiyama, Yushin Okami, Hatsu Hioki, Takanori Gomi, along with five other compatriot combatants in action.
The UFC on FUEL TV 8 card is likely to follow suit and feature as many homegrown products as possible. Currently, Gomi, Akiyama and Takeya Mizugaki are all without scheduled opponents, and could possibly be given the nod as repeat performers in Saitama.
