Takanori Gomi may be a shell of his former self, the wrecking machine he was back in PRIDE, but he was back in action on the main card of UFC on FUEL TV 6 today (Nov. 10, 2012) taking on Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig in a lightweight bout.
Gomi got off to a fast start, pressuring Danzig early while finding his range and effectively utilizing his vast array of strikes. Mac looked a little too patient and relaxed for the situation.
He turned it up near the end of the first round and did find some success offensively but Gomi had the clear edge.
The second and third rounds saw "The Fireball Kid" find more and more success as he flashed glimpses of the Gomi of old. As Kenny Florian was quick to note on the live broadcast, this was a multifaceted performance. It wasn't just about superior striking, it was a mix of takedowns and positional control.
By the time the horn sounded, Gomi had done enough to earn the split decision win on scores of 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28.
