The co-main event of the evening at UFC on FX 5: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" tonight (Fri., Oct. 5, 2012) at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, featured a welterweight scrap pitting Jake Ellenberger vs. Jay Hieron.
Ellenberger, a winner of six of his past seven, came in with a chip on his shoulder, eager to erae the memory of his latest failure, a crushing knockout loss to Martin Kampmann that knocked him out of contention in the 170-pound division.
Hieron, meanwhile, was tasked with playing spoiler in his big return to the Octagon. After all, he had defeated "The Juggernaut" before, roughly six years prior to tonight's rematch.
Round one was evenly paced, with Ellenberger landing a few solid shots but Hieron answering the call each time. There would be no quick finish here, especially considering Jake looked as though he was conserving energy.
Come the second, he was shooting in and driving through a takedown to take control with roughly three minutes remaining in the round. He did some solid work there, too, opening up a cut on Hieron's face before they reset back on their feet.
Hieron tried to get busy in the third but after pumping a few jabs, Ellenberger shot in and took him down. That was good to score a few more points and really drive home the unanimous decision win the judges were about to give him.
Sure enough, the scores came in 29-28 across the board. Easy peasy.
