Before the UFC on FX TV 5: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" main card kicked off on cable TV tonight (Sat., Oct. 5, 2012) from the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, an entire six-bout preliminary card was broadcast on FUEL TV.

The evening began with the pound-for-pound hardest name to pronounce, Darren Uyenoyama, using a measured game and a lot of patience to pick his spots and eventually submit Phil Harris in the second round via rear-naked choke.

It wasn't pretty. Actually, it was mostly dull and uninteresting, but a finish is a finish.

Up next was former featherweight top contender Diego Nunes battling perennial mid-card talent Bart Palaszewski. "The Gun" looked every bit the part of top contender, too, blasting and brutalizing his foe in the opening round.

"Bartimus" fought back with submission attempts after getting clocked but none of them came close to earning him a finish and the beating continued.

And while Palaszewski was game for a comeback in the later rounds, Nunes avoided disaster with a granite chin and unending heart to drop Bart one last time before the final bell, earning him the unanimous decision victory.

"Christmas" came early for fans of Jacob Volkmann, who utterly dominated Shane Roller from pillar to post in their lightweight tilt.

The outspoken Volkmann took Roller down, got his back, locked in a rear-naked choke -- or at least a fake lock, as Kenny Florian put it -- and forced a tap.

Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am.

The highest profile fight of the preliminary card featured a welterweight scrap pitting wrestler Aaron Simpson dominating the opening frame until Mike Pierce made a monster comeback with a big right hand in the second to earn him the knockout.

It looked deadly.

Truly a tale of two fights, as play-by-play guy Jon Anik called it.

It's good, too, because that came just one fight after the clinch heavy snoozer from Marcus LeVesseur and Carlo Prater, won by the former. The less said about it the better, though, Maniacs, just me on that.

The "main event" of the preliminary card featured Ultimate Fighter alum Michael Johnson battling Danny Castillo in what ended as explosively as any fight before it.

Castillo controlled the opening frame, planting Johnson and working from top. Nothing fancy or flashy, just a grind 'em down sort of style that wins fights at this level.

Well, usually.

It doesn't when you're opponent recovers and wastes you with a short left that drops you and finishes the job with vicious punches on the mat while you struggle to remain of this Earth.

The official preliminary card results are as follows:

- Michael Johnson def. Danny Castillo via knockout in round two
- Mike Pierce def. Aaron Simpson via knockout in round two
- Marcus LeVesseur def. Carlo Prater via split decision
- Jacob Volkmann def. Shane Roller via submission in round one
- Diego Nunes def. Bart Palaszewski via unanimous decision
- Darren Uyenoyama def. Phil Harris via submission in round two

That's it for the "Prelims" portion of the UFC on FX 5 fight card.
