Bellator 78 featured one of the worst late referee stoppages mixed martial arts (MMA) fans have seen in recent years.
In the Marius Zaromskis vs. Andrey Koreshkov Welterweight tournament semifinal, referee Jerry Poe was extremely late to stop the fight, allowing Koreshkov to land with a series of punches to Zaromskis, who lay slumped against the cage. The stoppage drew an immediate angry response from Bellator announcer Jimmy Smith, who was openly critical of the stoppage and angry at Poe.
Yesterday, Bloody Elbow confirmed with the Ohio Athletic Commission that the ending of the fight was under review:
"Executive Director Bernie Profato declined to comment [on the stoppage], stating simply that the Zaromskis vs. Koreshkov stoppage will indeed be reviewed."
No timeframe was given for the review, and no word if the results will be made public.
Here's footage of the stoppage from Zombie Prophet:
What do you think, Maniacs? One punch over the line ... or possibly 10?
Bellator continues its season this weekend with Bellator 79. The Welterweight tournament wraps up later this year with Andrey Koreshkov vs. Lyman Good in the finals.
