The whole purpose of having an interim title is to ... oh, what's the point?
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Interim Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao, who won the temporary title by defeating Urijah Faber at UFC 149, will not defend his belt and will instead sit on the sidelines until reigning division champion Dominick Cruz returns from injury.
That's according to his coach, Andre Pederneiras (via Bloody Elbow):
"He just won the title, just fought. We will wait. Look how long the wait was for Condit and GSP to unify the belt?"
Pederneiras is referring to the welterweight title picture, which is similar in that Georges St. Pierre also blew out his knee, allowing Carlos Condit to win the Interim strap by defeating Nick Diaz back in February. Where it's different, is "The Natural Born Killer" stands to make a windfall of cash as a pay-per-view (PPV) headliner opposite St. Pierre, one of the biggest draws in the history of mixed martial arts(MMA).
Renan Barao vs. Dominick Cruz main eventing a PPV?
They would undoubtedly deserve it, but the numbers would pale in comparison. Still, it's the Brazilian's call, and hard to dispute when UFC President Dana White already said he has no issue with Barao waiting for Cruz to get back into the Octagon.
Any fans out there feel otherwise?
