The UFC 153: "Silva vs. Bonnar" event kicked off its main card from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, tonight (Sat., Oct. 13, 2012) with a welterweight battle pitting Demian Maia vs. Rick Story.
The storyline for Maia coming in centered on a renewed focus on his submission game. After all, he hadn't submitted anyone in a bout in almost double digit fights since UFC 95 in Feb. 2009 against, who else, Chael Sonnen.
That's why it was no surprise when he came rushing out in the first round with a takedown and positional dominance on the floor. He transitioned from top to side control to back mount against the cage until he managed to get his arm underneath Story's neck.
And he cranked on it until the tap came.
The angle was ugly but this was about as dominant a performance as we've seen from the Brazilian jiu-jitsu badass. It took just 2:30 to submit Story, a game 170-pound challenger.
Watch out, welterweights.
