Vengeance is a dish best served cold. And Bellator Fighting Championships (Bellator) Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez may just get a chance to work on his own recipe for the entree.

Earlier today (Wed., Aug. 24, 2011),  ESPN issued a report that linked Alvarez to a possible rematch against current DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya AokiContracts have reportedly been dispersed to both fighters, who are expected to sign the agreements soon. If the fight is agreed upon, is it said to be taking place in earlier 2012 and under the Bellator banner.

For fight fans unaware, Alvarez lost to Aoki via quick first round submission (heel hook) at Dynamite!!! 2008 on Dec. 31, 2008, in Saitama, Japan, with the inaugural WAMMA Lightweight Championship up for grabs.

The Philadelphia fighter has not lost since, winning seven straight fights and establishing himself as among the top-ranked 155-pound fighters in the business. Aoki, meanwhile, has won seven of his last nine appearances with five of those victories ending via tapout.

The announcement comes at an odd time, as Alvarez currently has a title defense against Michael Chandler scheduled later this fall (Oct. 15) at Bellator 54, while Aoki is scheduled to take on Rob McCullough at DREAM 17 later this month.

Stay tuned.
