Kim Couture scissors submission loss to Sheila Bird at AX Combat (Video)

Kim Couture gets choked unconscious courtesy of a scissors submission by Sheila Bird at AX Combat 1 on July 8 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

With that out of the way, this referee is dangerously incompetent. Bird locks on the submission at around the 2:00 mark. Couture looks like she goes limp around the 2:08 mark. She undoubtedly goes completely limp at the 2:12 mark.

The referee doesn't step in until the 2:18 mark.

This is one of the most egregious, irresponsible and downright dangerous failures to uphold one's duty that I've ever seen in a mixed martial arts bout. This is absolutely unacceptable and that referee should not be allowed to have a fighter's safety in his hands ever again.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this, Maniacs, and let me know if my timing is off. Looks to me like a full 10 seconds passed from the time Couture went out and the time the ref signaled for Bird to let go of the choke.

Short breakdown of this madness after the jump.

This first screen shot shows the time immediately after Couture's right leg twitches briefly and goes limp, signifying she is unconscious. The referee is clearly in the proper position to oversee this. The time reads 3:19.

This second still shows the time immediately following Couture's left leg going limp, further signifying her lack of consciousness. The referee has moved to a position outside the view of the camera, although he is still relatively on top of the action. I don't see much of a point in his moving to this position, but whatever. The time reads 3:15.

This next shot shows a downright scary scene as the referee is directly above the action, presumably staring straight at Couture but apparently not noticing the far-off look in her eyes because, again, and I cannot stress this enough, she is unconscious. It may look like her lights are on but there ain't nobody home. I see no reason at all, under any circumstance, this fight should not have been stopped right here. The time reads 3:13.

The final screen shot shows the moment when the referee finally gives the signal that the fight is over, waving his hands above his head (out of view). The time reads 3:09 and as you can see, Bird still has the choke firmly locked in. This is a full 10 seconds after the moment Couture's right leg initially went limp.

If there is a good explanation for spectacularly bad officiating such as this, I would love to hear it.
