Rick Story was supposed to be the main event of UFC on Versus 4 tonight in a tough fight against a top contender in Nate Marquardt. It was also a short notice fight.
Then "The Great" got booted out of the promotion after some failed medicals and Charlie Brenneman stepped up to take his place. And once again, Story answered the call, taking an extremely short notice fight against a game opponent.
It's brought him a decent amount of play in the media but it's also a costly endeavor.
That's what it was tonight, as Brenneman out-worked and out-wrestled Story on his way to the scorecards and the decision victory.
Take a bow, "Spaniard," this one's all you.
At some point, all great stories must come to an end, but some do so before they can even truly begin.
Such is the case with Rick Story, who built a reputation as a tough hard-nosed grinder by winning six fights in a row and taking any and everything offered to him.
Confidence and a pair of grapefruits will only get you so far, though.
For Brenneman, it doesn't get any bigger. After losing out on an undercard bout against T.J. Grant, he stepped in late to replace the the new villain Marquardt and now that he's come away victorious, he'll get an even bigger rub.
Soak it in, Charlie.
