Been gone a few-LSC's thoughts on recent MMA news

Hey Maniacs'

Been a crazy week for me and i've missed out on commenting on some recent MMA news which in reality sucks because, one of my favorites, Josh Barnett is gaining some popularity, my faith in Shane Carwin is hurt but not broken (yet) and Kenny Florian didn't choke!

I'm going to reflect on Marcus Davicollecting his second straight win, UFC 131 and the upcoming 2nd installment of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix underway this weekend.

So, would you mind ripping me from limb to limb, agreeing or just saying whatever comes to mind?

UFC 131: Carwin vs. Dos Santos

Vancouver may be a scene out of The Warriors right now but, before the gang violence was isolated violence of the Octagonas we found out a lot about some fighters debuting, surprising and letting down.

The debuting Dave 'Pee Wee' Herman and Jon Olav Einemo blew the doors off the arena in a very intense battle of iron wills and iron chins. The two large framed fellows battled in a pure striking brawl even though we have all been marinated in the ADCC accolades of Einemo. If anything Einemorather the fight stand and bang then grapple and submit. Herman, was his usal flashy self and landed one of the nicest combos i've seen in the cage when he nailed a left kick to the body, thai plum with knee then a straight right. Just amazing

Mark Munoz since debuting against Matt Hamill has been a very slick 6-1 and UFC 131 proved to be his biggest win as beat former ,middleweight number one contender Damien Maia. The decision was close andMunoz who i am sure trained to defend submissions was surprised to see an ever evolving striker in Maia. He weathered blasts and squeaked a decision win over Maia. Neither man really has anything to be sad about as one of them won and either lost but both showed something the fans love to see, heart.

Kenny Florian silenced alot of doubt when he beat Diego Nunez at UFC 131 in his debut at 145 pounds. He clearly couldn't strike with Nunez but sure could wrestle him and beat him on the ground. I am shocked we didn't see a split win for Kenny but a UD was very nice notch on his belt. If Dana White is true to his word then Florian/Aldo should be happening as soon as both are fully healed and ready. I love the idea because i believe Aldo will kick Florian's ass and have his first huge name on his resume. The win would only validate him more and if Florian wins then the UFCgets a name behind the 145 belt.

Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin proved that time matters for almost every fighter except Randy Couture. I love Carwin because in the one and only time i have had the chance to meet him, i saw the desire of a 16 year old fighter wanting to be the best but in a mid 30's body. The sport of MMA is a lot of wear on tear on the body as i'm sure some of you know. It asks you to suffer through relentless pain to become the best. At UFC 131, we saw a younger and better rounded fighter detroy a fighter who may simply be too old to become anything now. He was at one point a few punches from becoming UFC heavyweight champion to Dos Santos'punching bag. He landed his two best shots but couldn't find any traction to grip on with them. Dos Santos knocked off one of the best for the past few years and now is in place to face Cain Velasquez.

I feel Cain is the better of the two but Dos Santos' fire is burning at a point that may be far too much for anyone. Dos Santos has always had my respect since, he sent Werdum to the mat and the UFC could'vedrew a chalk line around Fabricio.  I would bet on Cain to win at UFC 138 but a Dos Santos drubbing of the champion wouldn't shock these eyes.

Strikeforce: Heavyweight Grand Prix

This Saturday the second bracket of the quarter-finals go underway as Fabricio Werdum faces Alistair Overeem and Josh Barnett fights Brett Rogers.

In the co-main event we have former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett against Bret 'the grim' Rogers also known as the tire guy. Barnett, brings a wealth of talent and experience and it appears a beard as well to fight Rogers. Rogers brings two defeats from Fedor and Overeem and a lacklustre fight against Rueben Villareal. It appears Barnett is the sure favorite but like everyone has heard a billion times, Rogers has a 'puncher's chance'. If a 'puncher's chance' is the best hope for Rogers then i would bet we see Barnett vs. Kharitnov.

In the main event we see Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem vs. Fabricio 'fedor killer' Werdum. It literally is a classic match up of striker vs. grappler but don't be fooled, Werdum is a better striker then most people are giving him. The reigning champion is a the favorite and i expect him to keep that title against Antonio Silva. Werdu, is not only a Fedor killer he is the 'Emilenanko Killer' as he has beaten both brothers meaning Antonio Silva must go to eastern Europe and find Aleksander and whoop his ass to share that accomplishment. I expect Overeem to win nd if he doesn't he is still the Strikeforce heavyweight champion...sounds dumb eh?

SIDE NOTE: Fuck Daniel Comier, let's go Jeff Monson.

Josh Barnett's rise

For the past few eeks i'veread a trend of comments on Josh Barnett stuff and it seems he has won some fans over his recent videos of fixing broken noses (take that Jon Jones) and making jokes with Ariel Pelwani. I love that we can see his flaws abut still laugh as he really is funny. He cracks me up and i love his brawler style with slick submissions..CATCH WRESTLING FTW...in a sport where the pro wrestling roots are unrecognized due to us pounding our chests and being MMA purists, Josh Barnett brings up the past of Gotch and Lou Thez. It wasn't so long ago the Pride FC had an entrance ramp that made wrestlemania's a joke and the UFC had pyro. Josh Barnett has earned 200 points for his fun antics leading up to his next fight.
