Episode nine of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13, featuring heavyweight coaches and division rivals Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos, gets underway with Zach Davis preparing for his rematch against Chuck O'Neil. Davis wants to showcase his striking this time around but "Cigano" reminds him it's his submission skills that got him to the big dance.
Speaking of "Cold Steel," he wants to donate half of his finish bonus to Charlie Rader to help him resolve some personal problems. Without getting into too much detail, the term "child support" has reared its ugly head.
In the gym, Chuck promises we won't see "Trashbag Charlie" the day of the fight.
With two quarterfinal elimination bouts on the docket, we fast-forward to Chuck O'Neil vs. Zach Davis. No weigh-in footage so we'll assume everything went off without a hitch. Can we say the same about the fight?
Let's have a look.
Quarterfinal elimination bout #3: Chuck O'Neil (8-3) vs. Zach Davis (4-1)
Round 1: They touch gloves and Zach eats a combo coming in. Then another. Now a low kick. He shoots and presses Chuck into the cage and starts unloading knees. Chuck ties him up and they spend a fair amount of time hugging it out. Zach drops down a level but can't secure the leg and instead looks for the Plum. Nothing there. Referee Steve Mazzagatti has seen enough and separates them. Nice low kick by Chuck. Zach misses a head kick. Zach drops his hands and gets lit up on the feet and shoots out of desperation. They go to the cage and struggle for position. Zach sinks down but again gets stuffed. Chuck creates some space and cracks him one, backing him up and out of the cage hug. 30 seconds left and Zach is getting ripped apart on his feet. Good chin. Saved by the bell but another ten seconds and this fight is over. 10-9 O'Neil says Nostradumbass.
Round 2: Touch of gloves and a low kick knocks Zach off his feet. Chuck jumps in but then backs off and lets him up. Zach slow to rise. Chuck lands a hard combo and Zach shoots and drives him to the cage. Zach falls to his butt and ties him up but Chuck slithers out. Back on the feet and Zach is getting abused. Another failed shoot and they go to the fence. Lots of hugging and reversing. Too much for Mazz who breaks them up. Chuck with a hard low kick. Then a left. Chuck spends the last thirty seconds picking his shots and landing them. Zach ends the fight with a failed shoot. 10-9 O'Neil.
Result: Chuck O'Neil def. Zach Davis via unanimous decision
Later that night, Zach returns to the TUF house to reveal he suffered torn retinas in both eyes and needed emergency surgery. Yikes. He also has been advised to end his fighting career effective immediately.
Awful news.
The next day, Coach Dos Santos feels good about Ryan McGillivray despite the overall impression that he's the weak link among the remaining fighters. Ryan promises to prove there is nothing weak about him with a win over Tony Ferguson.
Both fighters share sad stories and we get the requisite piano solo. Like before, no weigh-ins for this final quarterfinal fight so let's just get to it.
Quarterfinal elimination bout #4: Tony Ferguson (10-2) vs. Ryan McGillivray (11-4-1)
Round 1: Touch of gloves and both guys exchange jabs. Ryan the more aggressive fighter and gets caught square on the jaw as he moves in. He stumbles and falls to his butt and Tony pounces in for the kill. Fight over.
Result: Tony Ferguson def. Ryan McGillivray via knockout
Team Dos Santos is down to one fighter, Ramsey Nijem.
That sets up the fight announcements for the semifinals which are as follows:
Ramsey Nijem vs. Chris Cope
Tony Ferguson vs. Chuck O'Neil
The idea is to pair up Ramsey and Tony in the live Finale as they are perceived as the leading candidates but anything can happen. Unfortunately that holds true back at the house as well, especially when the boys hit the bottle.
Everyone seems to be having a good time until out of nowhere an inebriated Tony is seen flying through the air like Superman, tackling Charlie Rader across the couch. Rader thinks it's all a joke until Tony starts taunting him about the son he's not allowed to see.
Personal foul ... number 10 ...Tony Ferguson ... 15 yard penalty ... first down.
That my TUF friends is below the belt and much of the house loses respect for him for those comments about Charlie's kid. Like Leon says: no women, no children.
A disgusted Chuck O'Neil promises to get revenge on Tony next week and take his dreams away. Can he do it?
Find out in seven days!
