Stop me if you've heard this one before.
Count Nate Marquardt among the many fight fans who are in a "Rush" to see UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre fight reigning Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, even though the Canadian has yet to satisfy the prerequisite for such a "super fight," namely an April 30 title defense at UFC 129 against Jake Shields.
And "The Spider" has some unfinished business of his own at UFC "Rio" later this year.
That doesn't mean it's completely off the table, as Marquardt tells ESPN.co.uk that St. Pierre is "definitely" considering it. Is that one of the reasons GSP persuaded him to make the drop to 170-pounds?
Here's "The Great" advice he got from the champ:
"Actually, he brought it up to me. He asked me what I was walking around at and said, 'Wow. You should drop to 170.' I was like, 'I don't know. You're the champion there. I want to be a champion'. He told me not to worry about it, that if that's what is best for me I have to do it. I didn't even think about it until he said it. Once I went back to my own camp, it made sense to me. Honestly, I'm not thinking about [fighting GSP] and if it's ever an issue I'll deal with it then. I don't know if [St. Pierre] is planning on moving up but I definitely know he's considering fighting Anderson. I think that's a great fight and I think he has the perfect style to beat a guy like Silva."
St. Pierre said he needs to undergo "a complete change of life" to take the fight at 185-pounds, which is where the Brazilian insisted on staying after cleaning out his division with a knockout win over Vitor Belfort back on Feb. 5.
Does a "St. Pierre vs Silva" superfight require a catchweight for it to happen? Or will Shields and Okami make sure it never comes to fruition?
And what happens if Nate Marquardt wants to challenge for the welterweight title? Could we be looking at another "Jones vs. Evans" implosion at the Jackson camp?
Anyone?
