The main event of the UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem pay-per-view tonight (Fri., Dec. 30, 2011) in Las Vegas, Nevada, was a BIG one, as Brock Lesnar made his highly anticipated return to the cage to square off against Octagon debutant Alistair Overeem.
The winner of this colossal showdown was promised a heavyweight championship bout against Junior dos Santos sometime in 2012. Really, there was no better way to close the year than with the biggest fight of 2011. And who does "Cigano" have to look forward to making his first title defense against?
None other than "Demolition Man," who used his vaunted K-1 level striking to earn a first round technical knockout win, just like he said he would.
The tale of the tape was quite simply Overeem having much better hands, kicks, knees, feet, arms, legs; anything used to strike with an opponent, "Reem" was just better.
Patience was the name of the game early, as Brock opened with a few low leg kicks and a jab. Overeem's opener was a winging overhand right that missed.
The first takedown attempt from Lesnar was avoided by "The Reem," though when they disengaged, we could see a cut above the Dutchman's eye.
Overeem was using big knees to the midsection to soften Lesnar up and it was working. Brock simply looked lost standing up with the K-1 champion. It's clear how terribly uncomfortable Lesnar is on his feet. Overeem remained patient and eventually another body shot got through that put Lesnar down.
Once Brock was on his ass and covering up, Overeem just unloaded with huge right hands that forced the referee to call a stop to the bout.
Maybe Lesnar isn't done as a fighter in MMA but he's certainly done as a legitimate title contender.
Junior dos Santos vs. Alistair Overeem in 2012, folks. Can't wait.
