UFC 142 results and LIVE fight coverage for 'Aldo vs Mendes' on Jan. 14 from Brazil

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is set to pull the trigger on its latest upcoming pay-per-view (PPV) event TONIGHT (Jan. 14, 2012) from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

UFC 142: "Aldo vs. Mendes" will be headlined by featherweight champion Jose Aldo, defending his 145-pound title against undefeated wrestler Chad Mendes. In addition, Vitor Belfort will strap on the gloves to try and ruin Anthony Johnson's debut at middleweight.

That's not all.

UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes (145-pound limit)

Round one: Mendes closes the distance early and throws a leg kick to get things started and then another. Mendes lands another inside leg kick and then an outside kick. Aldo responds with one of his own and Mendes wobbles from it. Mendes shoots in and Aldo avoids it, slipping from his clutches. Aldo lunges in and lands a big uppercut and Mendes drops for a takedown but can't put the champ on the ground. Aldo is looking great so far. Mendes shoots in, grabs a single leg and Aldo again twists free. Aldo has control of the center of the cage and he lunges in with a kick, Mendes drops down and puts Aldo in a body lock. Mendes tries to pick him up and Aldo blatantly grabs the fence to stay standing. He gets warned and Mendes picks him up again but can't put him down. Aldo turns away from Mendes and knees him right in the face! Mendes falls to his back and Aldo drops a pair of punches in before the ref stops the fight. That was violent!

Final result: Jose Aldo defeats Chad Mendes via knockout at 4:59 of round one

Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson (185-pound limit)

Round one: Johnson presses forward early, missing with a leg kick as both throw big push kicks. Vitor throws a big head kick but Johnson ducks it and takes him down. Belfort attempts an omaplata and Johnson backs off but he drops down with a big right hand into Belfort's guard. Johnson is just hanging on and the ref stands them up. Johnson misses with a big head kick and Belfort throws a big winging hook that misses. Johnson attempts another takedown and he presses Belfort against the fence, eating short left hands to the side of the head. Johnson lunges in with a big left and eats a knee from Belfort. Johnson is on his knees and Belfort falls to his back with Johnson on top. Belfort has some swelling in his right eye and Johnson isn't doing much in his guard again. The ref stands them up again and Johnson throws a pair of big head kicks. Johnson shoots in and gets stuffed, this time Belfort throws right hands and Johnson turtles as Belfort takes his back. Belfort has both hooks in and he drops some big punches. Belfort flattens Johnson out, dropping right hands. Belfort latches on a rear naked choke and he's got the grip tight! He flattens Johnson out again and he taps out!

Final result: Vitor Belfort defeats Anthony Johnson via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:49 of round one

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio (185-pound limit)

Round one: Massenzio flashes a jab early and Palhares responds with a pair of kicks. One goes a little low and Massenzio needs a minute to recover. Palhares throws another big inside leg kick, then another and he muscles Massenzio to the ground. Massenzio throws a big right hand and Palhares drops for a leg lock. He's got Massenzio's leg wrapped up in a heel hook and he starts torquing on it viciously until Massenzio taps out.

Final result: Rousimar Palhares defeats Mike Massenzio via submission (heel hook) at 1:03 of round one

Carlo Prater vs. Erick Silva (170-pound limit)

Round one: Both men stare each other down early and Erick Silva EXPLODES forward with a knee. Prater goes down and Silva follows up with more big strikes as Prater hangs onto a leg. Silva follows up with huge hammer fists to the side of the head and Prater goes limp.

Wow, I thought this was over, but apparently referee Mario Yamasaki says those blows were to the back of the head. Silva has been disqualified. This is pretty bad.

Final result: Carlo Prater def Erick Silva via disqualification

Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim (155-pound limit)

Round one: Both men sizing each other up early. Etim easily checks a Barboza leg kick and throws a head kick which is blocked. Etim shoots in and takes Barboza down but he gets swept and both men are back to standing instantly. Barboza digs in his heels and throws a nasty leg kick which connects and follows it up with another. Barboza connects with another outside leg kick and then an inside kick. Etim responds with a nice lead left hook, but his left leg is a huge target. Both men exchange and Etim shoots in for another takedown but gets stuffed, eating a knee in the process. Barboza lands consecutive inside leg kicks and then a nice body kick, mixing in some punches. He's looking real sharp here and Etim can't get off with anything. Barboza throws a big spinning back kick to the body right before the end of the round. 10-9 Barboza

Round two: Barboza gets to work immediately with a three straight leg kicks as Etim pushes forward. Barboza responds with a nice punch to the body and then a brutal outside leg kick. Etim closes the distance with a takedown attempt and a brief clinch but absorbs another knee from Barboza. Barbazo is doing a terrific job of staying on the outside and he again blasts Etim with a big leg kick. Barboza throws a strong flurry and finishes it off with another nasty leg kick. Etim throws a spinning back kick of his own and a nice right hand. Barboza throws out a jab and Etim times it, shooting forward and taking him down but again Barboza uses butterfly guard to immediately kick Etim off and get back to his feet. Etim throws an inside leg kick but Barboza responds with one of his own and closes the round with a pair of nice kicks including a switch kick to the body. 10-9 Barboza

Round three: Both men trade kicks early as Barboza looks to assert himself. Barboza throws a big right hand and Etim catches him with a decent punch. Etim pushes forward and whiffs with a big flying knee as Barboza side-steps him. There's not much action here as both men are staring at each other and out of nowhere Barboza throws a HUGE spinning heel kick which catches Etim in the face and knocks him completely stiff! That was one of the most insane knockouts in UFC history!

Final result: Edson Barboza defeats Terry Etim via knockout (spinning heel kick) at 2:02 of round three

Thiago Tavares vs. Sam Stout (155-pound limit)

Round one: Tavares rushes in and gets double underhooks. He gets the takedown and Stout is working hard to get back to his feet. Tavares trying to control the legs. Stout tries to get back up and almost gives up his back. He's able to defend and is back on his feet. Tavares with a good right hand. Stout throws the left hand and Tavares ducks under, gets underhooks and takes him down again. Tavares with a nice short left punch to the head. Stout uses the fence and is back on his feet. Tavares grabs hold of his hips and slams himdown. Stout back ot the fence and trying to get back up. Tavares doing a good job of taking Stout down at will, but having a hard time doing anything from the position or keeping him there. Stout is back up but Tavares has his neck. He works for the guillotine but Stout slips out and reverses him. Stout on top now working inside the full guard. Tavares is able to get free and it's back up to the stand up. Just over a minute left. Stout lands a good right hand to the head. Stout lands a left hook to the body. Tavares lands a good punch to the body then follows up with a left hook to the head that is partially blocked. 10-9 Tavares.

Round two: Tavares throws a few punches right away and lands with a couple. Stout with a good right hand. Stout with a good combination, landing an uppercut at the end. Both fighters throwing a lot of punches to start this round. Inevitably, Tavares shoots but is stuffed. Tavares with a good straight right hand to the head. Tavares with a kick to the body. Tavares changes levels and feints a shot and then backs out of it. Three minutes left. Big right hand for Tavares. Tavares working hard for takedown again but Stout defends well. Stout with a hard right kick to the side of Tavares. Tavares throws a big head kick but misses. Tavares with another head kick attempt that connects partially. Stout is cut from the kick around the left ear. One minute left. Good jab by Stout. Tavares with a good combo. Good exchanges by both fighters in this very even round. Good body shot by Stout. Close round, but probably 10-9 in favor of Tavares.

Round three: Big right hand by Tavares. Leg kick by Stout. Stout throws another leg kick that lands low this time. Tavares is writhing in pain. He's gonna need some ice. ::Pause:: Back to the action. Tavares throwing a large volume of kicks. Tavares feints a shot but doesn't follow through. Tavares throws a big overhand right that misses. Three minutes left. Tavares tries to take him down again but eats a knee to the body in the process. Tavares tries to take Stout again but is stuffed once more. Stout really needs to show some urgency here. Good leg kick from Tavares. Stout lands a good uppercut then a straight right. Stout with another jab. Stout with two consecutive jabs that pop Tavares' head back. Tavares with a good body kick by Stout catches it and nails him with a right to the head. One minute left. Stout coming forward with more jabs. And a couple more for good measure. Tavares is eating a lot of jabs in this round. Stout with a big right hand that has him wobbled then again! Stout with a barrage of punches that has Tavares seeing different colors, but it looks like it's too little, too late as the horn sounds. 10-9 Stout.

Final result: Thiago Tavares via unanimous decision

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ednaldo Oliveira (265-pound limit)

Round one: Feeling out process early on. Not much action but that shouldn't last long. One minute in and still nothing landed by either fighter. Oliveira lands a right hand to the body. Oliveira throws a right hand to the head that is blocked and followed by a takedown by Gonzaga who is now on top. He's trying to take his back. Oliveira able to stand back up but is put right back on the mat. Gonzaga in half guard up against the cage. Two minutes left. Oliveira trying to use the fence to wall walk but Gonzaga gets behind him and he has his back now! Gonzaga has a deep choke! It's over! Rear naked choke victory for Gonzaga in his return to the Octagon!

Final result: Gabriel Gonzaga via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:22 of round one

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Yuri Alcantara (145-pound limit)

Round one: No wasting time as these two exchange right after the hand tap. Omigawa eats a big knee in the process. Alcantara with a big combo and he's really getting off now. Omigawa rushes in and eats a few punches. Alcantara clearly winning the stand up so far. Three minutes left. Alcantar lands a solid one-two punch combo to the head. Omigawa holding his hands very low. Alcantara going backwards and lands a stiff right to the head. Alcantara with a body kick. Alcantara with a front kick to the body. Omigawa very active with a lot of movement but continues to get nailed by big strikes. Alcantara with a huge spinning backfist. He takes him down and has his back. Omigawa in a very bad spot. Somehow, he reverses him! Omigawa working inside the full guard with one minute left. Referee may stand them up here. Omigawa with a short elbow as he tries to get his leg out and take side control. Alcantara controls the leg and Omigawa is back inside the full guard. Alcantara with a deep armbar attempt right at the end of the round! They're checking to see if he tapped. The horn may not have come in time. Very odd finish to the round. They're letting it continue. 10-8 Alcantara.

Round two: Omigawa with a spinning backfist attempt that misses. Alcantara throws an uppercut that narrowly avoids Omigawa's head. And Alcantara lands a big punch that floors Omigawa. Alcantara on top and inside his full guard. Omigawa active from the bottom looking for a submission. Alcantara steps over his leg and now he has his back. Omigawa defending using wrist control. Three minutes to go. Alcantara trying to get his hooks in and flatten him out but having a hard time. Alcantara softening him up with elbows. Alcantara lands a couple short, hard punches to the head from the top. He has his back now and a deep choke but Omigawa slips out! Alcantara is in side control now and lands a good elbow. Omigawa pushes him back inside the guard. One minute left. Alcantara continues to land elbows and Omigawa appears to be cut around his right ear. Omigawa keeps trying to work for a straight armbar from the bottom but nothing doing. Round ends with Alcantara on top. 10-9 for Alcantara.

Round three: Alcantara lands a right to the head, but is looking really gassed. Omigawa appears to still be fresh. Omigawa drops down and feints a shot but pulls back. Alcantara throws a few lazy punches that are easily defended. Omigawa throws a spinning backfist that narrowly misses. Alcantara throws a big overhand left that misses. No one really landing anything significant. Alcantara looks exhausted as he throws punches. Alcantara lands a good left hand counter punch to the head. Two and a half minutes to go. Omigawa just can't seem to find the range. He rushes in and ties him up and gets the takedown. Omigawa surely needs a finish to win this fight. Omigawa has him up against the fence and is landing elbows. One minute left. Omigawa is laying on him now and in danger of being stood up. He postures up now and does land a decent elbow. Referee stands them up now with 15 seconds left. Alcantara lands a takedown right at the end of the round and should probably have stolen the round. Tough to score, but I'm calling it 10-9 for Alcantara.

Final result: Yuri Alcantara via unanimous decision

Ricardo Funch vs. Mike Pyle (170-pound limit)

Round one: Pyle throwing punches right out the gate. Pyle with the inside leg kick. Funch drops for the takedown attempt and Pyle defends. Pyle lands a knee to the body and slips away. Funch lands a decent right hand but is answered by a punch and big knee to the body from Pyle. Pyle is all over him , swarming him with punches and it's all over! Pyle with the big TKO victory over the native Brazilian to kick off the FX broadcast. Man. These Brazilian fans are not happy. ha.

Final result: Mike Pyle via TKO at 1:22 of round one

Felipe Arantes vs. Antonio Carvalho (145-pound limit)

Round one: Carvalho with a big head kick and then jumps on Arantes who is working from the guard. Arantes active from the bottom. Carvalho working from half guard now, trying to get a leg out,. He does and is now in side control. Bad spot for Arantes. Carvalho takes his back, but Arantes is able to roll him over. Carvalho working hard for front choke and Arantes gets back to his feet in the process. Carvalho, however, still had his neck. Arantes is out now and immediately shoots for a takedown. The shot attempt is stuffed easily and now Carvalho is in full mount! Arantes with a beautiful hip escape! Furious action here in this first prelim fight! Carvalho coems forward with a punch combination. Two minutes left. Arantes with a good jab. Carvalho answers with a one-two punch combo. Arantes with a good leg kick. Carvalho with a big head kick attempt that misses. Arantes lands a couple good punches to the head of his opponent. Both guys are slowing down considerably after a very fast paced early portion of the round. Arantes lands another good jab to the head. Carvalho with yet another head kick attempt, but Arantes blocks it. Carvalho rushes in, catches a kick and is swarming his opponent as the horn sounds. 10-9 Carvalho.

Round two: Arantes right away with a kick to the body. Carvalho throws another head kick that is blocked. And another. Carvalho with a good leg kick, answered by Arantes who delivers a powerful kick to the body. Arantes lands a stiff jab. Carvalho with another good inside leg kick. Carvalho comes forward with a good punch-kick combo. Good left hook to the body by Carvalho. Carvalho lands a couple of good punches to the head. Outside leg kick by Carvalho. Head kick by Arantes. Carvalho ties up Arantes and steers him into the cage. Carvalho working the knees. Carvalho drops down and tries to take him down but is defended well. Arantes reverses but eats a head kick on the way out. Arantes with a good high front kick that partially lands. Arantes rushes in and Carvalho ducks under to get underhooks. Arantes defends again. Good exchange where both fighters land a few punches. Arantes starting to get loose and is landing some decent strikes now. One minute to go. Arantes with a big flying knee to the body. Inside leg kick by Arantes. Good one-two punch combo landed by Arantes. Round over. 10-9 Arantes.

Round three: Carvalho with a good right hand to the head. Good leg kick by Carvalho. Arantes throws a left hook and follows it with a thundering leg kick. Leg kick by Carvalho that has Arantes backing up a bit. Carvalho is throwing a large volume of punches now. Both men clearly feeling the need to win this round if they want to secure the victory. Arantes with the takedown and is working inside the guard of Carvalho. Carvalho is controlling Arantes' wrist and now is in the rubber guard. Arantes slips out and postures up, trying to land some elbows and he does. Carvalho is cut now and is bleeding badly! Just under three minutes to go in the round and in the fight. Arantes is really landing some punishing ground and pound now. Two to go. Carvalho trying to escape but Arantes doing a good job of staying heavy on top. Another damaging elbow by Arantes. And another. Carvalho taking a lot of punishment from this spot. Carvalho is now cut on the other side of his face. Carvalho gets out and is back up. Arantes coming forward aggressively. Arantes with a big head kick that is partially blocked. Carvalho throws a punch that misses and Arantes answers with a knee to the midsection. Good right hand by Arantes. Carvalho coming forward and gets nailed with a good kick to the body. 10-9 round for Arantes who should get the decision nod.

Final result: Felipe Arantes via unanimous decision
