Perhaps the most anticipated bout on the UFC 136: "Edgar vs. Maynard 3" fight card taking place tonight (Sat., Oct. 8, 2011) in Houston, Texas, was Chael Sonnen vs. Brian Stann.
On the line was a middleweight title shot and the pride of two friends who had planned to train together before being matched up against one another.
Sonnen had been out of action since Aug. 2010, where he lost to Anderson Silva before taking an extended hiatus for complications with multiple athletic commissions.
Stann, on the other hand, has had the best year of any fighter in any weight class. Of course, that means nothing once you're standing across the cage from one of the best wrestlers in the 185-pound weight class.
And its the superior grappling of Sonnen that told the tale in this fight, as the former title challenger made his case for another shot at Anderson Silva but submitting Stann with an arm triangle choke in the second round.
Sonnen was as aggressive as he's ever been when the horn sounded to open the fight. He bum rushed Stann before sending him ass over tin cups and dominating from top position.
Elbows, punches, guard passes; Uncle Chael had his way with his opponent.
Naturally, the second round featured the very same opening. Sonnen rushed in, grabbed a double leg and slammed Stann to the mat.
Only this time he worked his way to an arm triangle choke and finished "All American" off after turning in one of the most dominant performances of his life.
Silva vs. Sonnen part deux, anyone?
The fans in Texas clearly wanted it, as they changed Silva's name after Sonnen's victory. What were boos quickly became cheers. And what did he tell Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview?
"Anderson Silva you absolutely suck!"
