A pair of exciting featherweights are headed for the Bluegrass State, as Erik Koch has been booked to fight Cub Swanson at the upcoming UFC on Versus 3 event, set for March 3 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
MMAWeekly.com brought word of the match-up earlier today.
Erik Koch is just 22 years old and already sports an impressive record of 11-1 in his budding professional career. "The New Breed" is fresh off a head-kick destruction of Francisco Rivera at WEC 52 in November that won him the prestigious "Knockout of the Night" award.
The Iowa native trains with Roufusport. That's the Duke Roufus led team that is quickly becoming famous in the world of MMA with such stars as Pat Barry and Anthony Pettis.
Koch brings the same level of excitement as his stable mates and this match-up has fireworks written all over it.
Cub Swanson was a wrecking machine when he made his way into the WEC. He's gone 5-3 in his time with the promotion but a couple of ugly losses have caused a few pundits to take him less seriously as a contender. In fact, the California native represents the lone victory in the last four years for legendary fighter Jens Pulver. He was also "posterized" by Jose Aldo when he knocked him out with a flying knee in all of eight seconds.
Yes, the Team Jackson product may have had his struggles but he can always be counted on for one thing -- thrilling performances in the cage. Three of his eight fights in the WEC resulted in "Fight of the Night" honors.
With a match-up like this, he might just win another one in his UFC debut.
UFC on Versus 3 is now official for March 3 in Kentucky and will feature a main event of epic proportions -- at least for a free TV card -- when Diego Sanchez tries to make Martin Kampmann's return to the cage a "Nightmare."
