World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), the sister mixed martial arts promotion to the UFC, will be making its Canadian debut right on the heels of UFC 115 -- which will also go down in Canada (Vanouver) on June 12 -- when WEC 49 takes place from Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on June 20.
The event was previously reported to be set for the same date, though in Calgary.
WEC Vice President Peter Dropick talked to The Canadian Press about the event and why the venue was changed.
"It really came down to availability of dates and venues. They're [Edmonton] eager for the WEC to get in there. We've had good feedback from that market. Good ratings, good TV ratings and good pay-per-view buys from the UFC standpoint. It's one of the hotter markets... The April show is stacked but we've got a deep, deep roster. We'll put on a strong card."
A match up between Ed Ratcliff and Canada's own Chris Horodecki is currently the only fight scheduled for the card.
