The rock-em-sock-em robot has managed to steal one in his return to the UFC.
In the very first live featherweight fight in UFC history, Leonard Garcia straight up robbed Nam Phan with a split decision win. It was so far off that the live audience started chanting, "bullsh*t, bullsh*t, bullsh*t" because they disagreed so strongly.
Garcia himself didn't really seem to believe his ears when he heard the announcement.
The fight was the typical affair involving Garcia. He came out in the first with his usual, winging punches with reckless abandon. However, he struggled to land his looping shots. And when he did land it was mostly to the body.
Phan, meanwhile, answered with precision strikes that did far more damage. Both the second and third rounds would play out the same.
"Bad Boy" came out in the second frame aggressive and opening with a kick. Instead of just swinging for the fences, however, he shot in and earned a takedown, but was unable to capitalize on it. Phan immediately got back to his feet and turned the tables on Garcia. He exploded on the Greg Jackson trained fighter and earned a knockdown before nearly finishing him with a rear-naked choke.
The third round saw Garcia gas out and struggle once again to land his looping shots. Phan controlled most of the round with his punches, but again, Garcia earned a takedown.
That may have been what earned him the victory in the eyes of the judges. There can actually be no other explanation, actually.
Phan was incredulous and said his thought was that, "The Asian brother can't get no love!" Garcia, for his part, said he would be glad to do a rematch.
Ho-hum.
