Report: Brendan Schaub vs Stefan Struve (not Frank Mir) possible for UFC on Versus 3

Brendan Schaub wanted to fight a former UFC champion after giving Gabriel Gonzaga his heavyweight pink slip back in October.

Well, Mir's the problem with that: The incomparable "Showdown" Joe Ferraro is reporting that a previously rumored contest between "The Hybrid" and former division kingpin Frank Mir has been scrapped in favor of a Schaub vs. Stefan Struve match-up.

The bout is expected to be featured as part of the UFC on Versus 3 special scheduled for March 3.

After a bitter separation with his consciousness during Roy Nelson's win at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 10 Finale in late 2009, Schaub roared back to conquer three straight heavyweight opponents, finishing two of his super-sized victims via first round knockout.

Following his unanimous decision win over "Napao," the Denver slugger asked for -- and seemingly received -- a major step up in competition against Mir.

The promotion has apparently changed its mind.

Struve might be playing second banana to Mir, but like Schaub, he's been lighting up his fellow heavyweights after getting checked in to Roy Nelson's KO hotel (also like Schaub).

"Skyscraper" was last seen banning Sean McCorkle in an eight-sided forum as part of the UFC 124 pay-per-view earlier this month.

Two heavy hitters and one spot in the pecking order. Who takes it?

UFC on Versus 3 is likely to go down on March 3 is expected to be headlined by a welterweight scrum between Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez and Martin "Hitman" Kampmann.

A middleweight melee featuring C.B. Dollaway and Mark Munoz is also in the works for the promotion's return to the Versus network.
