If you thought the injury-ravaged UFC 108 fight card coudln't take another big blow think again.
Former number one heavyweight contender Gabriel Gonzaga has been forced out of his upcoming showdown with up-and-coming prospect, Junior dos Santos, at UFC 108: "Evans vs. Silva" from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Jan. 2, 2010, because of a severe staph infection.
True story ... believe it or not:
"The hits keep coming for the UFC, Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva. The fellas have to scrounge up a quality heavyweight to fight Junior Dos Santos Jan. 2 in Las Vegas at UFC 108. Sources with the UFC confirmed that Gabriel Gonzaga is off the card because of staph infection."
"Napau" joins Brock Lesnar, Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira on the long list of notable fighters who have had to bow out of the promotion's traditional year-end "blockbuster" pay-per-view (PPV) event for various health reasons.
No possible replacement for Gonzaga is known at this time; however, Cain Velasquez would be an awesome fill-in if the promotion isn't scared of setting one of its brightest prospects back a little bit to start the 2010 fight season.
UFC 108 features a re-worked main event between former light heavyweight champion "Sugar" Rashad Evans and the hard-hitting 14-1 Thiago Silva. Power-puncher Paul "Semtex" Daley will also try to continue his ascension to the top of the welterweight contender list when he battles grappling wizard and former WEC champ Carlos "Natural Born Killer" Condit.
