Top welterweight contender and Octagon veteran Jon Fitch (13-2) is tentatively scheduled to face relative UFC newcomer Roan Carneiro (11-5) at UFC Fight Night 10, according to UFCmania source.
It's important to note that no bout agreements have been signed and it is still considered unofficial.
Fitch is fresh off a submission victory over Luigi Fioravanti at UFC 68 last month. During his in-ring post-fight interview, the low-key Fitch uncharacteristically called out Karo Parisyan — not because he doesn't like him but because he wants to face the cream of the crop in the division.
UFC matchmaker Joe Silva and the UFC brain trust decided to award Josh Burkman with that opportunity instead — a fighter Fitch wiped out via rear naked choke back at UFC Fight Night 4.
Carneiro — nicknamed "Jucao" — defeated Rich Clementi via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 9 earlier this month in his UFC debut. It wasn't the biggest test of his ability; however, he has been in it with top-level talent such as UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva and Ryo Chonan (both losses).
And Carneiro is going to need to tap into those experiences if he wants to get past an animal like Fitch, who is slowly — and quietly — racking up quite a hit list in the UFC 170-pound weight class.
Hopefully, we've got some big news on the way regarding this event. I'm still waiting on some things to come through, but it looks like a major UFCmania announcement is on the horizon.
Stick around.
