While his immediate future is unknown because of an eye injury sustained during a loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 68, the manager for Canadian middleweight Jason MacDonald, Mark Pavelich, is eager to see a showdown with his client and Martin Kampmann, according to Sherdog.com.
Here's a snip:
"... when asked about future opponents for The Athlete,' Pavelich said that MacDonald has proven he belongs in the mix with other top middleweight contenders. No specifics have been discussed with the UFC, but Pavelich added that he'd like to see a match-up with Dane Martin Kampmann."
Kampmann is coming off of an impressive first round submission victory over Drew McFedries at UFC 68 — one that disturbed many viewers who thought he didn't release the choke soon enough and finally did so well after the Miletich product was unconscious.
Both fighters are on the fringe of the elite in the division when compared to 185-pound studs such as Anderson Silva, Nathan Marquardt, Rich Franklin, Mike Swick and Yushin Okami.
Making the potential match up more appealing is that fact that all of the fighters mentioned above — sans Franklin — already have fights scheduled.
However, it's whispered that the winner of the Swick-Okami bout at UFC 69 on April 7 will fight Franklin for an eventual shot against the winner of the Silva-Marquardt championship bout at UFC 72 on July 7.
Provided the MacDonald injury heals (he has already resumed light training) both fighters also have the benefit of timing having fought on the same night.
It's not a marquee attraction, but a clash between these two would be a solid addition to any main pay-per-view (PPV) card.
Here's to hoping we see it one day soon.
