When he floored Matt Hughes (40-5) with a left high kick to the jaw at UFC 65, Georges St. Pierre (13-1) captured the UFC welterweight title.
It turned out to be the best fight of 2006, according to the latest UFCmania poll.
Here are the results:
UFC.com recently listed the Best Fights of 2006, and Hughes-St. Pierre 2 didn't even crack the Top 10. Either the editors over there are sniffing glue or we just have that many "Rush" fans coming to this site.
Either way, it was an electrifying and dramatic performance put on by St. Pierre.
Here are some other lists you might want to check out if you haven't already.
Also important to note, UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell (20-3) earned 2006 Fighter of the Year recognition from Sherdog.com.
With decisive wins over Randy Couture (14-8), Renato "Babalu" Sobral (27-6) and Tito Ortiz (15-5), "The Iceman" beat out PRIDE Open-Weight Grand Prix winner and UFC heavyweight Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (21-4-2) and Georges St. Pierre for the honor.
I just want to thank the more than 600 readers responded on the week-long poll. It was a great turnout, and it's always interesting to get a glimpse into the thoughts and opinions of our readers.
We'll get a new poll up soon. If you have any ideas, feel free to email them over to us or leave comments.
Thanks again
