UFC Fight Night 8: Hermes Franca vs. Spencer Fisher

Spencer and Hermes

Two of the UFC's most exciting and talented lightweights -- Spencer Fisher (19-2) and Hermes Franca (17-5) -- will face off in the Octagon on January 25 for the right to challenge Sean Sherk (31-2-1) for his 155-pound title, according to InsideFighting.com.

Here's a snip from Franca's manager in the article:

"All the paper work is done for what will have to be considered a number one contender's eliminator match for the UFC lightweight title. Nothing is guaranteed. But the direction of conversation has been that either Fisher or Franca will likely be in line for a shot at Sherk."

Maybe this is Dana White's way of making things right with Franca after recently stripping him of his WEC lightweight title under the UFC acquisition.

Regardless, Franca and Fisher are both deserving of a crack at the belt.

Franca is 2-0 in the Octagon since returning to the organization in July. From 2003-2004, he was 1-2 in the UFC, losing to Josh Thomson (11-2) and Yves Edwards (29-11-1) and besting Caol Uno (22-9-4).

The Brazilian most recently submitted Jamie Varner (11-2) via armbar at UFC 62 and choked out Joe Jordan (28-10-2) at UFC 61.

As for Fisher, "The King" has piled up a nice collection of wins in the Octagon (5-1) since his debut victory over Thiago Alves (9-3) last year at UFC Fight Night 2.

The lone blemish on his UFC record came at the hands of Sam Stout (10-2-1) at UFC 58 in March. Fisher took the fight on short notice and was forced to cut a significant amount of weight in a short time, draining him physically once the action started.

Even still, he lost via split decision.

This is a great match up and helps round out a nice card for January 25 on SpikeTV.
