Maia-shields

The Welterweight main event between Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields last night (Oct. 9, 2013) at UFC Fight Night 29, which took place at Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, Brazil, was indeed that close. And now we have photo evidence, which proves that the judges were all over the place, with inconsistent round-by-round scores. Indeed, only two of the five rounds were scored unanimously for either fighter. Did the judges simply "not show up" or was it really that split? Jorge Santiago tells Tatame that he thinks he can submit BJJ ace, Demian Maia, in their upcoming bout at UFC 136 in Houston this October: How are your training for the fight going? Right after the fight was over (against Brian Stann), I took some time off and started training it step by step. I’m still not playing his game, I’m just doing a strong basic preparation. I hope to do a great fight with him. Demian wants to show his striking, so I’ll enjoy trading punches with him too. Do you believe he’ll want to bang with you? I don’t know. For what I could tell about his last fight, he really likes striking, but he’s strongest point is his Jiu-Jitsu. If we must strike, let’s do it. What are your thoughts about his Jiu-Jitsu? He has an excellent ground game. I’ve watched his fights for a long time, he has a good ground game, but mine ain’t any worst. I still haven’t had the chance to show it in MMA, but I can fight him on the floor. My ground game is focused in MMA, I don’t only work on the guard, use it to sweep… If you are not careful, I’ll get you and you’ll tap out. You’re not afraid of Demian while on the floor? No… If he makes a mistake, I’ll submit him. UFC 136 coverage

Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago Planned for UFC 136 in Houston - Bloody Elbow

More fun! Yay! "Two Brazilian middleweights will face off in Houston this October, when Demian Maia meets Jorge Santiago at UFC 136. Maia announced the fight on his Twitter account this afternoon. Maia and Santiago are both coming off of losses, although Santiago's (a knockout against Brian Stann) was certainly a lot more decisive than Maia's close decision loss to Mark Munoz. Although both men are BJJ black belts, Maia is certainly a much higher-level grappler than Santiago, while Santiago's striking game is more developed than Maia's, although Maia did show marked improvement in his stand-up against Munoz, so this should be an interesting fight."

Munoz Ready to Accept Showdown with Brian Stann

Mark Munoz's manager has revealed the middleweight is ready to accept a hard-hitting fight with Brian Stann. With reigning champion Anderson Silva fighting Yushin Okami at UFC 134, the middleweight division does not have a clear contender for the next 185lb title fight. Michael Bisping has delayed his title run to coach on TUF 14 against Jason Miller, while Chael Sonnen remains suspended from MMA. Vitor Belfort has already had his shot, so a Stann v Munoz fight could determine the next contender. "After coming off a big win over Damien Maia, Mark would welcome any fight that brings him closer to a title shot," manager Mike Roberts told MMAWeekly. "If that fighter is Brian Stann then so be it. If that's the fight the fans want to see, Mark would welcome that challenge. Brian Stann is a great guy, so it would be Good Guy vs. Good Guy. That can be compelling in itself."
