UFC 146: Could tonight's 'biggest' event be the quickest main card in UFC history?

The main card of UFC 146

One by one, fights were announced for the UFC 146 card. A preliminary fight here and there, but the meat -- the pay-per-view (PPV) main card -- all turned out to a Heavyweight contest.

The PPV broadcast will hold five bouts where 10 heavyweight fighters will look to advance their rankings in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

The main event, a bout between heavyweight kingpin Junior dos Santos and Frank Mir, sees the champion lock horns with a two-time former champion and each are coming off first round stoppages. For the champ, it was a knockout over Cain Velasquez that won him the title, and for Mir, a submission victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is what led him to this evening's event.

The co-main event is Velasquez himself taking on Antonio Silva. Combined, the two men have nearly 30 fights to their name. And of those bouts, only four times have they involved judges in the outcome.

The two men in the title bout have only gone to a decision a combined five times.

What does all this mean?

If history is any indication, we may be in store for the shortest main card in UFC history.

UFC 146 fight card: Junior dos Santos vs Frank Mir preview

Photo

The UFC heavyweight title is on the line tomorrow night (May 26, 2012) as UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos takes on former two-time champion Frank Mir in the main event of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dos Santos has had an incredible run through the heavyweight division, slicing through opponents like a hot knife through butter and his victory over Cain Velasquez last November to capture the division crown was a testament to that. He's hoping to start building a legacy and he can't do that without knocking off Mir, a dangerous foe at the top of the division.

Frank Mir is a two-time champion, having defeated Tim Sylvia back in 2004 and then knocking out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in 2008 to win it again. He's been on a solid run, winning three straight bouts to get right back into contention. He stepped up when there was a vacancy in the challenger slot and he's hoping to become a three-time champ.

Will dos Santos cement himself as the best heavyweight on the planet? Can Frank Mir play spoiler and potentially tap out "Cigano" on the big stage? What's the key to victory for both men tomorrow night?

Let's find out:

UFC 146 fight card: Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Silva preview

Cain Velasquez Antonio Silva

Two of the most terrifying heavyweights on the planet will be on display this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez takes on Antonio Silva in the co-main event of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Velasquez is over six months removed from losing his title to Junior dos Santos and is extremely motivated to get back on track. Once hailed as the potential future of the UFC heavyweight division, the American Kickboxing Academy product is out to prove that he still can be that guy.

Antonio Silva scored a tremendous victory in 2011, scoring a second round doctor stoppage against Fedor Emelianenko, but he was put down with authority by Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix semifinals. The giant Brazilian is being counted out in this fight so he's heavily motivated to prove his doubters wrong.

Can Velasquez return to form against an opponent who's had issues against AKA fighters in the past? Can "Bigfoto" stomp the former heavyweight champion? What's the key to victory for both men on Saturday night?

Stipe Miocic prepared for a three round war against Shane del Rosario at UFC 146

Two big, powerful strikers ... anyone think this thing will make it to the judges?

Stipe Miocic will be prepared either way, as he trains for his upcoming heavyweight fight against Shane del Rosario at the UFC 146 pay-per-view (PPV) event on May 26, 2012 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

So what's the bad news?

One of these two undefeated 265-pounders will taste defeat for the very first time in their career, as Miocic has amassed an 8-0 record with seven finishes while Del Rosario has racked up 11 straight wins and bumped off each one of his victims in the process.

The Croatian delivers his scouting report to MMA Weekly:

"I'm ready for a three round war, get the 'W' any which way. If it's knockout, decision, submission, doesn't matter, just get that 'W.' I'm excited, I can't wait for Saturday to come. I looked at all his fights from Strikeforce, of course, some of his Muay Thai fights. He had a terrible car accident, he's been out for awhile, trying to get himself healthy. Who knows, he could have changed his style, so we'll find out Saturday night. He's got good knees and kicks and stuff, he's pretty quick. The only thing he's got on me is the high kick. It's terrible! I'm trying to get there, I'm not flexible enough yet."

Hear more from Miocic as he continues to break down his upcoming fight after the jump.

UFC 146 fight card: Roy Nelson vs Dave Herman preview

Photo

Two of the UFC's most intriguing heavyweights will meet this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as The Ultimate Fighter season 10 winner Roy Nelson takes on Dave Herman on the UFC 146 main card in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nelson was on the verge of title contention before losing three of his last four fights to three of the best heavyweights in the UFC today. He's received criticism about his weight and even teased dropping down to 205 pounds, but he'll be battling at his traditional weight this weekend.

Dave Herman is a fighter that is always brought up when discussing heavyweight athleticism and potential, now he's just got to realize it. "Pee-Wee" has moved his training camp to Team Quest with Dan Henderson but that didn't help him in his last fight, a second round TKO defeat at the hands of Stefan Struve. He took some flack for his attitude and appearance by Dana White and he'll need to show he's taking things seriously this time around.

Will "Big Country" bring the pain against Herman? Can "Pee-Wee" realize his potential against perhaps his toughest test to date? What's the key to victory for both men this weekend?

Let's find out:

UFC 146 fight card: Stipe Miocic vs Shane del Rosario preview

Photo

Two of the brightest undefeated heavyweight prospects in the UFC will duke it out this Saturday night (May 26, 2012) as Stipe Miocic takes on UFC newcomer Shane del Rosario on the main card of UFC 146 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Miocic has quickly burst onto the scene in the UFC, winning his first two fights and notably finishing his last opponent via knockout inside the first minute of the first round. The Strong Style fighter has some serious power and is hoping to keep his momentum rolling against a fellow rising heavyweight.

Shane del Rosario was once the most talked about heavyweight prospect in Strikeforce, but a 2011 car accident left him with a serious back injury. He's been sidelined for over a year but is finally back and ready to make his UFC debut. Del Rosario possess elite striking skills, having been a former WBC heavyweight kickboxing champion and he should give Miocic all that he can handle inside the Octagon.

Will Miocic be able to put del Rosario away before the Californian can shake the rust off? Can "No Limits" halt Miocic's momentum? What's the key to victory for both men on Saturday night?

Claude Patrick vs James Head booked for UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary

Photo

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is slowly but surely filling up its upcoming UFC 149 pay-per-view (PPV) fight card for the ScotiaBank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 21, 2012.

Coming out of the chute, via the promotion's official Canadian Twitter account, is a 170-pound match-up pitting Canada's own Claude Patrick against stateside up-and-comer James Head.

Patrick (14-2) saw his 13 fight winning streak snapped against the rough-and-tumble Brian Ebersole at UFC 140 last December. It was the first defeat inside the Octagon for "The Prince," who will try to prove he's still royalty against a very well-rounded fighter.

Despite his background in boxing, Head (8-2) has done his share of submission fighting and last tapped Papy Abedi at the UFC on FUEL TV 2 event earlier this year in Sweden.

Which one of these talented welterweights gets it done on fight night?

UFC 149 features a main event title fight between reigning featherweight champion Jose Aldo putting his 145-pound title on the line against the dangerous striking attack of division number one contender Erik Koch.

Other main card match-ups include Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's return from injury to face off against Cheick Kongo while Michael Bisping tries to get back into the 185-pound title hunt against middleweight "Barbarian" Tim Boetsch.
